Muscle Rehabilitation Through Magnetic Stimulation

One of the newest treatments available to correct stress incontinence requires the patient to simply sit in a chair.

This special, electromagnetic wave chair strengthens pelvic-floor muscles. Weak pelvic floor muscles are a common cause of stress incontinence.
The electromagnetic chair creates a pulsating magnetic field that causes the pelvic floor muscles to contract. This exercises the muscles, building strength, endurance and, in more than 50 percent of patients, continence. The patient sits in a special chair fully clothed as the magnetic pulse is turned on. The machine does all the work, and there is no pain. Patients may feel a small vibration or tapping. Some may even feel the pelvic floor muscles contracting. Essentially, the electromagnetic chair automatically does Kegel exercises for the patient.

Patients might consider this therapy if their incontinence is bothersome but isn't bad enough to warrant surgery. It's also an option for patients who have failed medications or who don't want medications because of potential side effects.
The magnetic chair has a success rate of about 55 percent. On average, patients come to Hattat Hospital twice a week for about eight weeks for the treatments. Each session takes less than 30 minutes. Treatments can be repeated periodically if necessary to maintain muscle control.
